Book Description:

Ben longs to be Prime Minister one day. But with no political connections, he is about to crash out of a Masters degree with no future ahead. So when by chance he becomes fast friends with a young Arab prince, and is offered a job in his government, he jumps at the chance to get on the political ladder.

Amal dreads the throne. And with Ben’s help he wants to reform his country, steering it onto a path towards democracy. But with the king’s health failing, revolutionaries in the street, and terrorism threatening everyone, the country is ready to tear itself apart.

Alone in a hostile land, Ben must help Amal weigh what is best against what is right, making decisions that will risk his country, his family, and his life.

My Review:

The story follows two men, Ben and Amal, in two different countries/cultures.  They both have hopes and dreams, but some unforeseen events change their future and the plans they had for their lives.  I liked both of their interesting backgrounds and wanted to see how the book would bring them together.

A chance meeting and personal political aspirations will catapult Ben into a life and country that he may be ill prepared to tackle.  He has dreams of changing the world for the better (aspirations to become Prime Minister). He meets Amal in the University bar while he was visiting and they have some drinks.  “No one in this university bar had any idea that the lonely young man in the corner by the stairs had this evening become friends with someone who, in just a few months, would be a king.”  So the adventure begins…

Amal ultimately becomes King of Argolis and Ben becomes his advisor.  Ben will soon learn that he is ill prepared for the forces that want to destroy him and keep him from influencing the king.  Will they prevail in changing the government or will it destroy them first? Will they both learn what their true skills are?

This is a quite interesting political tale of two cultures that will have you questioning the two men’s decisions and motivations. If you’re looking for something with some political suspense, and some edge of seat situations, this is it!

About the Author:

Born in Brighton, I went to school in here, worked many jobs here, and have never lived anywhere else. I first started writing at school, where I and a group of friends devised and performed comedy plays for assemblies, much to the amusement of our fellow pupils. The young ones would cheer (and the old ones would groan) as we stepped up onto the stage, the buzz was tangible. It has been with me ever since.

As an adult I have written a short comedy play that was performed at the Theatre Royal Brighton in May 2014 as part of the Brighton Festival; Daye’s Work, a television pilot for the local Brighton channel; and won the Empire Award (thriller category) in the 2015 New York Screenplay Contest. I published my first novel, You Can’t Make Old Friends, in 2016; my second, Choose Your Parents Wisely, in 2017, and now my third, The Benevolent Dictator, in 2018.

My inspirations as a writer come from a diverse range of storytellers, but I have a particular love for the works of Shane Black, Raymond Chandler, Francis Ford Coppola, Agatha Christie, Joel & Ethan Coen, Arthur Conan-Doyle, Alfred Hitchcock, Christopher Nolan, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Bryan Fuller, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Towne, JRR Tolkien, and many many more books and films beside. If you can’t find me, or I’m not answering my phone, I’m probably at the cinema.
