This book carried me away like a tense, horrific, and dangerous roller coaster which was Nazi occupied France. It was an absorbing, adrenaline producing page-turner. I felt all the emotions of the Frenchwomen and what they endured during World War II.

Two sisters are brought together and will make decisions and sacrifices that are unimaginable. Vianne lives in the countryside with her husband Antoine and daughter Sophie. The younger Isabelle is living in Paris with her father until World War II changes everything. The sisters are very different and Vianne is afraid and feels the need to comply. Isabelle is brash, strong, outspoken and ultimately joins the Resistance. There is also a love story where Isabelle meets Gaitan. He tells her “everytime we kiss it means goodbye.” My heart was breaking too!

The authors writing skills are powerful as she captures the heartbreaking devastation that the Nazis inflicted onto their community. It was so hard to read about the Jewish women and children rounded up and deported. I think I may have even been shaking as I turned some of the pages. It affected my deeply.

With a high dose of adrenaline, fear, and courage and told beautifully and respectful. Highly recommend!!! I now need to recover from this book. I look forward to my next Kristin Hannah novel!
